Monday, September 24, 2007Safaricom tune up for Muturi and Syombu over 21km before Stanchart Nairobi Marathon
Nairobi based runners, Elijah Muturi and Magdeline Syombua were respective winners of the men and women’s 21km Marsden Madoka Half Marathon at Nderenye Farmers Training Centre in Mwatate.
The 26 year-old Muturi, who was using yesterday’s race as build up for next month’s Stanchart Nairobi Marathon, broke clear with four kilometres left to breeze to victory in 1:00.57.
Following two minutes behind the winner was Machakos athlete, Peter Kioi (1:02.17) while John Maina clinched third place timed at 1:03.12 in the staggered race ran through hilly roads of Mwatate Town.
Upcoming Syombua was equally dominant in the women’s race where she mastered scorching conditions to claim the win in 1.11.56. Rispa Kwamboka finished a distant second with a time of 1:25.38 while Margeret Mutio came in further with a time of 1:38.45 to take third.
Both winners of the 21km race sponsored by mobile phone service provider, Safaricom, dairy firm Brookside and area MP, Marsden Madoka took home Sh50, 000.
